We only have a handful of foster homes right now, with the majority of dogs and cats being housed at our Director's home. Increasing the number of foster homes would allow us to help more dogs and cats.
What's involved in being a foster home?
To be a foster home, you have to be willing to make a commitment to take a dog or cat into your home and care for that animal until they are adopted, however long that may take.
How long does that take?
Well, that depends on the animal. We try to pull dogs and cats that will be desirable and quickly adopted. Sometimes we may get an animal that needs a little more work before they are ready for a new home. They may have behavioral issues that need to be worked on or they may be sick or injured and need time to heal. Because we are a no-kill organization we do not euthanize animals that aren't adopted within a certain period of time. This means that the foster home has to be prepared to keep that dog/cat for the rest of that animal's natural life, if necessary.
Who pays for the care of the animal?
Happy Whiskers covers all vet care such as; spay/neuter, shots, worming, etc. We also provide dry dog and cat food for our fosters. We ask that the foster home provide flea/tick prevention and Heartworm prevention if they can afford it.
How do potential adopters meet my foster animal?
Part of fostering a dog/cat means that you are required to bring the dog/cat to our Petco adoption events or to allow potential adopters to come to your home to meet that animal. Cats usually require an in-home visit because they don't do well at Petco. If you don't want adopters coming to your home, you can always arrange for them to meet the dog in a public location.
Isn't it hard to let go of an animal after you've fostered it?
Yes and No. You do get attached to the animals but at the same time, there are always more that need help. It is sad to see a foster get adopted after you've loved and nurtured them, but also happy because that animal is getting a really good home with a family that will love them forever. We do allow our foster homes to adopt their fosters. All of us in rescue have adopted at least one of our fosters and we understand that sometimes you just can't let go. We encourage our foster home to look at the bigger picture because there are so many dogs and cats out there that need help and a good temporary home. Part of the fun of fostering is getting to see what your next dog or cat is like. You get to work with all types, personalities and breeds, and that can keep things interesting.
